Classes

Classes by grade and by day

Each grade has its own classroom and teacher. The school day is the same for every grade, and Fridays end early so that families can plan the weekend.

What children do

What children read, make and practice

Each stage builds on the last. Every child moves at their own pace, and teachers meet families to talk about it.

  • Kindergarten

Letters and sounds, counting with real things, songs and stories, and a quiet time after lunch. Children learn the routines of the school day and of Mass at a gentle pace.

    • Reading aloud every day

    • Counting and making patterns

  • Grades 1 to 3

Reading in small groups, a few sentences of writing every day, number facts and word problems, and a weekly music class. In second grade, children prepare for First Reconciliation and First Communion with the parish.

    • Reading groups by need

    • Music every week

  • Grades 4 and 5

Longer books and chapter reports, fractions, a unit on Pennsylvania history, and the first science lab. Each class prepares a morning prayer for the school once a term.

    • Chapter books and reports

    • Science in the lab

  • Grades 6 to 8

Teachers by subject for literature, math, science, history and religion, with a study hall and a service project each year. Eighth graders lead the school in a few of its traditions.

    • Teachers by subject

    • A service project each year

Families

How families take part

Teachers meet families in the fall and again in the winter, and write home about every child twice a year. Families help at the fall festival and give a few service hours across the year, and the office explains how at a visit.
